Rama, an eight-year-old mute boy who lives with his widower father and younger brother, dreams of one day becoming a police officer like the superheroes he watches on TV. When an estranged relative living in Pakistan visits them and tells them that their father has died and left them land, they set out for India to fulfill their dream. Rama and his brother travel backpacking across India until Rama falls gravely ill at the border of Pakistan. While trying to cross into their homeland on foot with Bhaijaan, a stray dog who has been accompanying them through the journey, officials take him away from Bhaijaan. After a few years of living in the streets and living in poverty, Bhaijaan is trained as a police dog by his savior, Inspector Sharma, who he leaps at the treat bag when Sharma gives it to him.
